2025 Freedom Journey Trip Recap https://www.naccc.org/2025-freedom-journey-trip-recap/ Thu, 20 Mar 2025 14:11:48 +0000 https://www.naccc.org/?p=17336

The NACCC’s Mission and Outreach Ministry Council’s recent Freedom Journey trip to Greenville, SC, was a deeply enriching experience that allowed participants to explore and learn about African American history, culture, and faith.

The journey began at the Greenville, SC, airport on Friday, March 13th, as participants arrived at the location of the New Year’s Day March, the first large-scale demonstration of the civil rights movement in South Carolina, in which 1,000 individuals protested the removal of Jackie Robinson from the airport’s “white waiting area.”

On Saturday, the group shared an amazing day with Brenda Lee Pryce, the first Black female state legislator in South Carolina and author of North of Main. Brenda engaged the group by sharing with them the history of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, which was organized during the year of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Mabel Owens hosted the Freedom Journey group on Sunday, sharing her family’s story of resilience when their farm was threatened by the KKK and, in retaliation for the family’s decision to hold their ground, the Soapstone Baptist Church and a home owned by the Owens family were burned.

On Monday, the group visited Ft. Hill at Clemson University, a plantation owned by John C Calhoun, US Vice President under Andrew Jackson, which had employed several slaves who were buried without markers. Only recently was that addressed. They also explored Oberlin Faith Cabin Library, built to serve rural African Americans during segregation, which received many of its books from Congregationalists at Oberlin College in the 1940s. They group rounded out the day with a visit to The Retreat Rosenwald School, significant for its role in African American public education during the first half of the twentieth century.

The Freedom Journey trip to Greenville, SC, was a great success, providing participants with a profound and enriching experience that deepened their understanding of African American history, culture, and faith, highlighting the enduring legacy of resilience, community, and justice.

NACCC Prayer Circle https://www.naccc.org/naccc-prayer-circle/ Tue, 03 May 2022 15:30:03 +0000 https://www.naccc.org/?p=2226 Monday Evenings at 8PM Central on Zoom

The NACCC Prayer Circle is a weekly gathering of fellow Congregationalists from around the country who meet by video conference to pray for local, regional, national, and international concerns. Each week, participants pray for personal, church, and societal concerns, and follow up with one another. The prayer time is led by a facilitator, but opened to the group for those who desire to pray out loud on behalf of those who have gathered.

The group meets each Monday by Zoom video conference for about half an hour. All are welcome!

“We tend to use prayer as a last resort, but God wants it to be our first line of defense. We pray when there’s nothing else we can do, but God wants us to pray before we do anything at all.”
— Oswald Chambers

THE CONGREGATIONAL LECTURER

Rev. Dr. Mary E. Biedron is the Senior Minister of North Congregational Church in Farmington Hills, Michigan, and has been active in local, statewide, and national fellowships among churches affiliated with the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches for over 30 years. She is a graduate of Methodist Theological School in Ohio, M.Div (1999) and D.Min (2015). Her dissertation explored the historical practice and contemporary possibilities for discernment in Congregational churches.

Lecture Topic: “The Great Crossing, Then and Now”
As we celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Plymouth Pilgrims’ Great Crossing to North America, it’s important to reflect on the beliefs, theological assertions, and self-understanding that they brought with them, and those that they had to leave behind. What can this tell us, as we confront a different, but just as profound, kind of Great Crossing? What are the beliefs, assertions, and understandings that we need to carefully take along, and what do we need to leave behind…and how do we make those choices in an authentically Congregationalist way?

Congregational Lecture

THE BIBLE LECTURER

David Clark, PhD, and his family moved to Minnesota in 1988 to teach at Bethel Seminary. He has served in senior leadership in a church and at Bethel University. Dr. Clark just retired from his last role as VP and Dean of Bethel Seminary. During his years as faculty, he wrote eight books and dozens of articles and contributed as a member of several boards, including the national board of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. Dr. Clark now serves the wider church through consulting and public speaking.
